Position Summary: 

As the Treasurer of Savana, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the financial health of our organization. In addition to the general responsibilities of a trustee, the Treasurer holds a unique position to ensure that our financial resources are managed effectively and transparently to support our mission. Your expertise in financial matters will be instrumental in guiding our financial strategy and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

As the Treasurer of Savana, you will:

  • Oversee, approve, and present budgets, accounts, and financial statements to the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure that the financial resources of the organization meet its present and future needs.
  • Establish and maintain an appropriate reserves policy to safeguard the organization’s financial stability.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the board, providing insights and recommendations for financial management.
  • Ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place to maintain the integrity of the organization’s financial systems.
  • Liaise with any paid staff and volunteers about financial matters, providing guidance and support.
  • Advise on the financial implications of the organization’s strategic plans, contributing to informed decision-making.
  • Establish and maintain an appropriate investment policy, ensuring alignment with the organization’s objectives.
  • Monitor the organization’s investment activity and ensure compliance with relevant policies and legal responsibilities.
  • Ensure that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the required format for funders and statutory bodies, such as the Charity Commission.
  • If external scrutiny of accounts is required, ensure that the accounts are scrutinized through an independent examination or audit, and implement any recommendations.
  • Keep the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities, providing financial education as needed.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the organization’s fundraising strategy.
  • Make a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting, presenting key points in an easily understandable manner.
  • Serve on appraisal, recruitment, and disciplinary panels as required.

Person Specification:

In addition to the person specification for a trustee, the Treasurer should have the following qualities:

  • Financial qualifications and experience, demonstrating expertise in financial management.
  • Some experience in charity finance, fundraising, and pension schemes.
  • The skills to analyze proposals and examine their financial consequences.
  • Willingness to make recommendations that may be unpopular but are in the best financial interests of the organization.
  • Availability to provide staff with financial advice and address inquiries on an ad hoc basis.
